SBC timing

#1 Post by Bowtiestang » Thu Jun 04, 2009 ix:05 pm

Do you guys call back 40 deg timing is to much for a 355 SBC. My car seems to run the best with forty. I dropped it to 36 lost .40 sec dorsum up to 37 deg yet .20 slower. I have never tried over 40 deg.

My 427 with 11X heads runs all-time at 41˚. The 447 SB2 I put together last year ran best at 29˚. Sneak up ane/two˚ at a time and watch your plugs, you might still demand a little more. Besides, are you sure your balancer/pointer is correct?

I will meet how she runs fri... I accept it back at xl right now... think I volition run it starting time there then crash-land information technology upward a piffling.. I was mixing 110 race fuel and 91 pump 50-50. At present that it is 100 degrees out I think I should run all 110 fuel.. will report back :thumb:

Combustion chamber efficiency and octane are two big players in timing. Higher octane fuel burns slower, so you have to start the burn down earlier. And then if y'all get from a mixture of pump gas to straight 110, it'll want fifty-fifty more than advance.

Domed pistons and poor bedchamber shape/size cake flame travel and injure mixture motion. This also will pb you to demand a lot of timing.

I personally don't like mixing fuel. Its hard to get the same mix every time and your performance will vary.

40 degrees is not that uncommon for SBCs. Its on the high side, but if that's what information technology likes, that's what it likes.

Keep going upward 2 degrees untill the MPH stops going up, then go dorsum 2 degrees and lock it down.
Each and every engine is different, by doing this, its a safe way to go and let the engine tell you lot what It desire'due south.

My sons Nova stopped picking upward MPH at 46 degrees, so at present its prepare at 44 degrees and he has been running better and so he ever has.

Simple but information technology works.

Gotta plan, spend it before she tin, and go as fast as y'all can.

Additional Notation - Humidity volition affect what timing it wants as well, water vapor in the air will slow downwardly the burn process.
